Organic Food - How and Where to Get It
Today, a good selection of organic food is probably found in your regular supermarket.
While there may not be a huge selection (yet) I do make it a point to visit the organic produce first. If I luck out, I can buy most of my food (produce) here.
Often, I need to supplement my list with traditionally grown produce.
Please pay attention to where it is grown. Locally grown foods tend not to have been stored as long and should have a greater nutritional value.
Here are some useful tips to buying organic food...
Don't Judge a Book (or a fruit) by it's Cover
Supermarkets/Grocery Stores- You may notice that organic food doesn't look as pretty as the other stuff you used to buy.
Remember that most likely, a lot of chemicals and waxes went into making that shiny red apple shine the way it does.
Deadly insecticides kept bugs from ruining it's flawless finish. And certain preservatives may have been used to make it's shelf life rival a twinkie.
Because it looks better, doesn't mean it tastes better. It certainly doesn't make it better for you. So, next time you see that pathetic, slightly bruised, dull, organic apple... gobble it up!
Non-Conventional Places to Buy Organic Foods
Health Food Stores - Many of the big chain and even the smaller health food stores provide extremely high quality, safe foods.
Unlike many conventional grocery stores, Whole Foods Markets buy only the highest quality produce, and it shows. The problem with this is that few people can afford these prices on a regular basis.
I visit these stores once every few months and mostly buy organic foods (and
natural organic skin care products
) that I can store or freeze.
Community Supported Agriculture Programs - If you live in an agricultural area, CSAs are a great program you may or may not have heard of.
Most farmers aren't paid until the end of the season which can really stretch their wallets.
With CSAs, you pay the farmer for part of their operating costs and they give you a part of their crop. This way you get fresh, seasonal vegetables.
Farmer’s Markets - These are a great way to get the freshest produce at decent prices. Just be sure to ask the farmer if their crops were organically grown before you buy.
Of course, in many areas famer's markets are not available during the entire year. In this case, you will need to consider the other options during the colder months.
Online Delivery Services - What could be better than having fresh organic and natural foods delivered to your house when you need them?
All you do is put in an order online, or have a standing order, and the products are delivered to your house on a regular basis. You can even ask them to give you whatever is in season or best at the time!
Join a Co-op - Paying a small member’s fee to join a co-op can get you big discounts. This also is a great place to find local organic foods when the farmer’s market isn’t open.
We did a lot of talk about produce. Remember that recognizable, brand name manufacturers are coming out with organic options.
More and more, I've been seeing organic chips, organic sauces, organic cookies, etc. Be sure to look for the USDA logo to make sure it is at least 95% organic and authentic.
Buying organic food is best. Food not treated or grown with chemicals are better for you and our environment. They also are showing to be richer in nutrients.
Keep these tips in mind for making healthier choices for you and those you buy for.
