Natural Acne Treatments

If you're researching natural acne treatments it probably means you are concerned about the chemicals in most acne skin care products. Natural remedies are also good for those who are skeptical about taking medications like antibiotics.

Perhaps, what you are currently using just isn’t working. We will address all of these very important points. Understanding why acne occurs is part of the battle.

Acne is considered one of the most common skin conditions people face. It most likely develops during infancy, adolescence and adulthood. If you are lucky like me, you may go a round or two with acne during all three of those stages in your life!

Slowly but surely we are beginning to understand why acne occurs. Hence, we are more able to control outbreaks. And the good news is, there are natural acne treatments that will protect you and your skin.

Home remedies for acne are most effective when treating Acne Vulgaris, the most common form. To read more about it's charactersitics please visit the different types of acne page.

The Great Debate

You may have heard that manipulation of your diet IS NOT a useful natural acne cure. Some experts vehemently argue that diet does not affect acne breakouts.

However, there is growing evidence that what you eat directly affects hormone balances in your body. And hormone fluctuations are what most every skin expert agree trigger most acne flare ups.

For example, eating high sugary foods can create a surge of hormones… So… apparently, mom was right. “You ARE what you eat!”

Following an acne diet and boosting your immune system can be a useful natural acne treatment.

Why the “Same Ole’, Same Ole’” Just isn’t Cutting It

While home remedies for acne and natural treatments are often successful. It is critical to understand why the conventional products we’ve been using have not been working.

Conventional Cleansers

Most of us use over the counter cleansers claiming to treat acne. The problem is that most of these are far too harsh on the skin. They strip our skin’s protective barrier and oils. You may think this sounds good for oily skin. However, our skin only over compensates by producing even more oil than before!

Excessive washing and scrubbing of the face can also exacerbate premature aging. So, less is more when it comes to washing your face. A wash in the morning and a “detergent free” (sulfate free) and “alcohol free” cleanser and toner at night should be enough.

There are many potentially dangerous chemicals found in skin care products. If you would like to learn more please visit the sodium lauryl suflate page.

Please! Don’t Squeeze!

Most of us have squeezed or zit or two in our desperate attempt to rid our skin of an unsightly blemish. But be warned. Squeezing pimples often leads to permanent scarring. Besides that, it may also lead to deeper infections that can spread and cause more blemishes!

There are 5 types of acne scars. They vary in severity from mild to severe. Thankfully there is an acne scar treatment for the different kinds of permanent and semi-permanent scarring.

Bacteria and Oil – lets be friends!

What? “I thought these guys were enemy number one when it comes to acne.” Well, yes and no.

As mentioned above we need the good bacteria for our bodies to protect ourselves on a daily basis. Antibiotics kill all of the bacteria in our bodies. You may consider taking a probiotic if you have been prescribed an antibiotic by your physician. Please consult with your doctor.

Oils are wonderful natural acne treatments. This is because not all oils clog pores. In fact, many oils dissolve undesirable acne causing oils and are good for our skin. Your skin will be well nourished and won’t be as prone to over compensate by making more of its own oil.

My best facial moisturizer is a mixture of olive and castor oils. Many people with mild to moderate acne (including myself) have seen great results from this acne home remedy.

“Quick Fix” Natural Acne Cures and TREATMENTS

I use the term “cure” loosely here. Your body is the only thing that can REALLY cure acne. You however, can help by working with your body by using natural acne treatments.

There are organic and natural acne treatments you can use to help clear your skin today. Some of which are home remedies for acne you may already have your kitchen cabinet!

Let’s start with the most popular one…

  • Tea Tree Oil – because of its antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties, the Tea Tree is a great natural resource. This oil has been proven very effective at reducing redness and inflammation caused by acne.
  • Neem Oil – great at reducing redness and inflammation, but also reduces scars and moisturizes with rich fatty acids.
  • Olive and Jojoba Oils – great ingredients to look for in your natural and organic cleansers. These will not clog your pores but will leave your skin slightly moisturized. Your skin will not be as likely to over compensate by producing more oil. (Remember to find a cleanser with no detergents (ex. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) or alcohol.
  • Lemon juice alone or mixed with a dab of baking soda – This combo makes a great little spot mask to help clear a pesky pimple.
  • Fresh garlic taken internally and/or rubbed directly on the lesion can fight against acne.
  • Ice – Some find relief by applying ice to an area as soon as you feel a pimple emerging.

    Other helpful Tips….

  • Use clean towels to wash face and acne areas. Do not rub these areas.
  • Use clean hands to wash face.
  • Use a natural and gentle exfoliate twice/week.
  • Steaming your pores on a regular basis can help decongest skin.
  • Remember that stress is a contributing factor to unhealthy skin and acne. High stress levels can increase certain hormones causing breakouts. You may want to try walking or meditating to relax.
  • Wear natural or organic makeup. Many synthetic chemicals in makeup can cause or aggravate acne.

Please Do Not Despair…

The range of severity in Acne Vulgaris can vary widely. And indeed, there are more severe forms of acne than Acne Vulgaris. These can be damaging physically as well as psychologically.

Please seek advice from a dermatologist if you feel your acne is severe or if you are continually feeling depressed about your appearance. The above treatments can always be used in conjunction with other more aggressive treatments.

Hopefully, these natural acne treatments will greatly help those with the more common forms of breakouts. Please check back often to see what’s new on the natural acne treatment frontier!

Here’s to your health and glowing skin, Naturally!
