Natural Baby Products and Common Rashes
Using natural baby products for newborn care and baby rashes is best!
Baby skin care products play an integral part of a baby's over-all health.
Newborn skin in particular is very thin. Their oil producing glands are not yet effective, making them vulnerable to dryness.
In addition, they're often susceptible to a multitude of common rashes and skin conditions.
Natural remedies often help when the following baby rashes are minor...
-
Baby eczema
- Usually due to heredity and is often aggravated by dry skin and allergies.
-
Seborrheic dermatitis
- Often a part of newborn care this yellow, crusty rash on the scalp is also known as Cradle Cap.
-
Diaper rash
- This is common in damp areas where skin rubs together.
-
Baby Acne
- Triggered by the mother's hormones in baby after birth.
-
Milia
- Temporary, pearly white bumps sometimes confused with baby acne.
- Prickly heat - Itchy rash that develops in skin folds usually when baby is dressed too warmly.
Because baby and newborn skin is sensitive and reacts quickly to outside stimuli we tend to give it a lot of attention.
However, too many lotions and ointments can aggravate their skin and possibly compromise their health.
Conventional baby skin care products can carry potentially dangerous ingredients. For example,
sodium lauryl sulfate
(SLS) is a harsh chemical used in many bath products. It can aggravate baby rashes. We avoid this ingrendient at all costs.
Bubble baths and shampoos often carry harsh detergents (such as SLS!) and artificial colors considered toxic.
You may want to consider using certified
organic baby bath products.
Tips for newborn care and baby rashes...
Use organic and natural baby skin care products. They should be detergent (SLS), artificial fragrance and dye free.
Cloth diapers
are gentler on baby's skin and our environment. Thanks to modern designs they are much more convenient than the cloth variety of yesteryear.
Be sure to check the ingredients in your baby wipes. Often they are full of synthetic chemicals that can damage or penetrate skin.
Homemade baby wipes
are easy, safe and economical!
Generally, babies only need to be bathed 2-3 times per week. Using a natural cleanser in areas prone to dirtiness such as the neck, hands and diaper area should be sufficient. Be sure to rinse thoroughly.
Pat or air dry baby before diapering or dressing. Never rub their skin dry.
Wash all clothes in a dye and fragrance free detergent BEFORE they wear them. If your baby's skin seems to be extremely sensitive or breaks out with a lot of common rashes, consider
organic baby clothes
and bedding.
Organic olive oil can be a great moisturizer for dry skin and baby rashes. It can serve as a excellent substitute for conventional baby oil.
Let their skin breathe. We tend to bundle them up constantly. When the temperature's right - let them be free!
Avoid direct sunlight until at least 6 months of age and then use a sunscreen. The
best sunscreen
is one that is made with mechanical barriers such as zinc oxide rather than chemical ones.
Organic baby food is best for baby when they begin to eat solids. Just as their skin is ultra sensitive so is their developing body and biological systems.
Often home remedies can substitute for conventional skin care.
It is important to test all natural remedies and new baby skin care products on a small patch of healthy skin first.
Never use nut based oils or honey for newborn care or on a child under the age of two years old.
Every day, new organic and natural baby products are coming on the market.
Unless the products are labeled 100% Certified Organic (ex. 100% USDA Organic in the U.S.A.) you should read the ingredients for possible skin irritants and chemicals.
Keep in mind, that less is more when it comes to baby. The best thing for their skin and health is your loving touch.
