What is Newborn Milia?

Nearly half of all babies have milia. While it may upset some parents to see their perfect little baby with not-so-perfect skin, there is nothing to worry about.

These tiny cysts are largely thought to be due to pre-mature sebaceous (oil) glands. The pearly white (sometimes yellow), round bumps are often confused with baby acne.

Unlike red, baby acne that develops after several weeks, babies are often born with this skin condition. They are most often found on the face but sometimes elsewhere on the body. When these benign bumps are found on the roof of the mouth they are called, "Epstein Pearls".

They form when dead skin cells get trapped within a pocket of skin. Sometimes they become fluid filled, but there is no need for concern.

Is There a Treatment for Milia?

milia pictures, newborn skin This skin condition will slough off as the natural exfoliating process begins. Do not try to exfoliate a baby's skin to speed up this process! Delicate baby skin should be left alone as much as possible. Picking or extracting these cysts can result in scarring or infection.

Any specific treatment for minor baby rashes or dry skin care can be treated with natural baby products.

So don't fret over the temporary appearance of these tiny bumps. They don't hurt, and babies don't care what they look like. Isn't that great!

Adults get these skin blemishes too. This is different than that of an infant. Usually it is due to sun exposure or other skin damage. They are most commonly found around the eyes.
