An Easy Homemade Facial Moisturizer For Your Skin and Pocketbook!

I use this homemade facial moisturizer every day! I've also discovered why few store bought products can compare to using olive oil for skin care.

Of all the homemade skin care recipes I love to try, this one is my favorite natural beauty secret.

The two key ingredients... olive and castor oils.

Castor oil for skin is cleansing. This ingredient will help keep skin clear of blemishes and other unsightly cysts and bumps.

Olive oil for skin is highly moisturizing and readily absorbed. It is full of antioxidants that will protect skin from environmental factors that can age or damage skin. You can read more about olive oil as a moisturizer here!

The combination is as good as any expensive store bought moisturizer I've ever used.

It can be used as a facial cleanser, mask, or leave-on moisturizer. It can be tailor made to suit most any skin type.

Do you have a favorite natural beauty secret or recipe? We'd love to know about it!

There are so many home remedies for skin and beauty that really work. If you've ever tried something you love, share it here!

What you need for my favorite homemade facial moisturizer...

1. Extra Virgin, Cold Pressed (organic if possible) Olive Oil - Don't use the "light" variety as it is nearly void of nutrients.

2. High Quality Cold Pressed Castor Oilicon (this is a well-kept natural beauty secret!)

3. A clean container with a seal for storage - preferably glass.

That's it!

I have combination skin. My T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) can be a bit on the oily side and occasionally breaks out.

**If you are very acne prone you may want to consider using grapeseed oil in place of olive oil. While neither clog pores, grapeseed is lighter and many with acne prefer it. Here's a Great Variety of Grapeseed Oilsicon to choose from.

My cheeks and around my eyes is very dry.

During the winter months I use a combination of 75% olive oil to 25% castor oil. (I just eyeball it - no need to get too technical!)

The rest of the year, I increase the amount of castor oil, but never go over 40%.

For instance, during the steamy summer time, I make my homemade facial moisturizer with 40% castor oil and 60% olive oil.

Too much castor oil can actually dry the skin. Most people will not exceed 40-45%.

Of all homemade skin care recipes this is one of the most versatile as it is easily customizable and can be used three ways...

  • 1. The castor and olive oil for skin can be used for cleansing. Just add some to a cotton ball and remove dirt, excess oil and makeup. Rinse with warm (never hot) water.
  • 2. Apply liberally to clean skin and steam your face and neck. This can be easily accomplished with a warm damp towel. Again - NEVER HOT!

Let the warmth open pores. Don't be afraid of the oil. The castor oil is highly cleansing.

Once your skin feels "purged" do a quick rinse with cool water to close pores.

  • 3. You can gently massage this homemade facial moisturizer directly onto the skin and just leave it on. This is what I do now. I first started at step one. When I saw how well my skin responded I moved to step 2 and now... here I am!

I've found that if I apply it first thing so it has time to soak in, my makeup goes on much more smoothly. However, I do avoid my eyelids and lashes if know I'll soon be applying eye makeup.

Remember to use a sunscreen if you are using homemade skin care recipes as they will not be in your product.

If you desire "heavy lifting" ingredients that smooth skin texture such as retinols and AHA's, you will probably need to find a more conventional product.... Not to worry... I use my store bought best facial moisturizer only at night. So, I'm getting the best of both worlds - for about half the price!

Too good to be true? That's what I thought.

But this time tested natural beauty secret has been a favorite for many people of all skin types.

A few tips to remember...

Keep your homemade facial moisturizer in a dark place. Light will tend to make it rancid more quickly. Remember, it doesn't have any icky synthetic preservatives in it.

Olive oil does spoil. So be on the look out for discoloration. I've noticed that mine tends to last about 4-6 weeks.

Thoroughly cleanse your bottle or get a new one before making the next batch.

Adding some Vitamin E can naturally increase the shelf life and add more moisturizing benefits.

For all these reasons my homemade facial moisturizer has become my number one natural beauty secret!
