Your Guide to Natural Facial Skin Care

An effective facial skin care routine should be utilized every day for beautiful skin.

Facial skin is thinner and more delicate than most other skin.

It is almost always exposed to sun, wind, pollution and other potentially damaging factors.

For these reasons a consistent and effective natural facial skin care regimen is imperative.

Step One: Finding Your Best Morning Face Cream

Goal: Find the best facial moisturizer for your skin type. It should protect your skin from environmental damage and pre-mature aging.

Every face cream should have one thing in common... Antioxidants!

These naturally derived vitamins and minerals neutralize free-radicals that damage skin cells. Many varieties of antioxidants offer other benefits as well.

    A few popular examples...

  • Vitamin C - aids in collagen production and smoothes skin.
  • Flavanoids - found in oils and green tea are becoming popular antioxidants in natural skin care products. They protect cells and reduce inflammation. See the homemade facial moisturizer made with olive oil that I use daily!
  • Vitmin E - is highly moisturizing. When used with Vitamin C is believed to repair sun damage.
We can't mention protection without mentioning sunscreen.

Many moisturizers contain sunscreens. If yours doesn't, be sure to apply your best sunscreen after your morning moisturizer.

Step Two: Skin Cleansing

Goal: Gently cleanse skin without causing dryness or damage.

Skin-safe cleansing is a large part of natural facial skin care. Don't be fooled by pretty packages. Most conventional cleansers contain harsh detergents and preservatives.

These are damaging to skin and strip the natural protective barrier and oils. This leads to all sorts of problems including...

  • excessively dry skin
  • excessively oily skin (this skin type tends to over compensate and will then make too much of its own oil)
  • premature aging including, fine lines and wrinkles
  • inflammation including redness and puffiness

Natural facial cleansers should have the following in common...

  • naturally derived ingredients... organic if possible
  • fragrance free
  • dye free
  • detergent (ex. sodium lauryl sulfate) and alcohol free
The oil cleansing method is a great homemade remedy to cleanse and nourish skin. It's great for all skin types - even acne!

Goal: Gently remove any residual dirt, makeup or cleanser. Balance the skin's pH level so that it can look and function at its best. Leave skin more accepting of a moisturizer.

Using a skin toner is one of the most under utilized steps in facial skin care.

Gentle, natural toners have many important functions. Complete facial skin care should never be without one.

After a thorough cleansing an efficient skin toner will bring skin back to its natural pH level.

These too should not be full of harsh chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate and isopropyl alcohols.

Once skin is "prepped" with a toner a nightly application of face cream is in order...

Step Four: Nighttime Facial Skin Care

Goal: Finding your best facial moisturizer that aids in night time skin repair and renewal.

Sometimes your morning face cream will be sufficient at night. However there are certain criteria to consider.

For instance...

Does your moisturizer have a built-in sunscreen?

If so, you may want to find one without the added chemicals.

While they are necessary during the day, those looking for a more natural approach to skin care will want to do without them at night.

Are you interested in more aggressive anti aging face creams?

Many consider the best anti wrinkle creams to contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and other ingredients that smooth skin and even texture.

Unfortunately, these ingredients leave skin more sensitive to the sun.

If you decide to use these types of anti aging creams, night application is the best time. Always, always, always use sunscreen during the day.

Example natural anti aging ingredients believed to improve skin texture...

  • Vitamin A - also known as Retinol.
  • Glycolic Acid
  • Lactic Acid
  • Vitamin C

The skin around the eyes is the thinnest and most delicate. Thankfully, there are natural ways to combat puffy eyes, dark circles and crows feet.

The eye area may also need its own particular cream or anti aging serum.

The fragile skin of the face deserves its own special care. Give it the extra attention it deserves with a consistent facial skin care regimen tailor made for you!
