Natural Ways to Treat and Prevent Diaper Rash...

    1. Change diapers often and immediately after stools.

    2. Sometimes changing brands can help. Many brand name diapers are bleached with chlorine. This can be very irritating to a baby's delicate skin. You may want to try natural disposables such as Seventh Generation or Mother Nature.

    3. Ever think of using cloth diapers? This can help babies with sensitive skin and is better for our environment.

    4. An all natural or organic baby bottom balm is safe and effective for every diaper change. This can protect skin before a rash has a chance to set in. So can many home remedies for diaper rash.

    5. What's in a wipe? Be sure to read labels on your baby wipes! These often contain numerous skin irritating chemicals. I was shocked to find what was in some of the brands I WAS using. Consider homemade baby wipes. They are safe for baby and easy to make.

    6. Let baby's bum get some air! This can be tricky, however airing out baby's bottom every day for about 10 minutes will let skin breathe. This may even be enough to avoid diaper rash all together in some babies and tots.

    7. In a hurry? Yes, busy parents often are. But take the time to let your child's skin dry before you apply a rash treatment. Always air or blot-dry skin, never rub it dry.

    8. As mentioned above, if you anticipate not changing diapers for a prolonged period, such as a road trip or overnight, use protection. Zinc Oxide is a natural occurring mineral that forms a protective, mechanical (as opposed to chemical) barrier between the skin and wetness. It can be found in numerous diaper rash creams, including natural ones.

There are a variety of diaper rashes. It is good to know what you are working with. If you are unsure or the rash seems severe, consult a physician.

Different Types of Diaper Rash...

Sensitive skin - Some babies just have more sensitive skin than others. If allergy symptoms like hay fever, asthma and baby eczema run in your family they may be more likely to get diaper rash. For these babies, preventative measures with a diaper rash cream or ointment is necessary at every changing.

Contact rash - Prolonged periods of skin being in contact with either urine or feces will generate this type of rash. It usually happens overnight. A contact rash turns skin pink or red. It is flat unless untreated where it can blister or peel. A cream with zinc oxide used nightly can help avoid reoccurrence.

Intertrigo - This forms from the rubbing action in the folds of the skin. Usually seen in between the groin area and the thighs, this bright red rash resembles a burn. It can be avoided and healed by applying a natural treatment in the dry skin folds of baby before diapering.

Yeast rash -This happens when yeast from the intestines infects the damaged skin from diaper rash. Often this is seen after taking antibiotics since the friendly bacteria aren't able to keep yeast amounts in balance. These rashes appear more severe and are usually bright red with raised bumps. This should be looked at by a doctor. Pro-biotic acidophilus is often prescribed by doctors as a natural treatment in this case.

Food allergies - Sometimes a red ring, resembling a burn will appear around the anus. This could signal a food allergy in baby.

Finding the right treatment can make a huge difference. As with other baby skin conditions such as cradle cap , the right ingredients are critically important.

Ingredients that moisturize such as olive oil and jojoba are wonderful for baby's skin. Anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory components like, aloe vera, calendula and chamomile are added bonuses. They will ease soreness and greatly increase skin healing.

Organic and natural baby products that contain little or no synthetic ingredients should be safe to use at every changing. Keeping your precious little ones protected and happy!
