My Best Facial Moisturizer and So Much More

We will concentrate on what I consider to be the best facial moisturizer, since a person's face is the first thing we see. Although, any of these products and homemade skin care recipes are great for all over use.

Our skin is as individually unique as we are. It has different looks and needs and it is important we tune into that. However, there are some common denominators. Things we can ALL do to benefit our health and skin.

Many well known skin care brands carry dangerous ingredients in their products. There are two things you can do to make sure what you are using is both healthy and helpful. First, you can make your own homemade facial moistuizers. You can also buy natural and organic skin care products that don't contain harmful ingredients.

We have been programmed to think (myself included) that we need tons of expensive products to achieve healthy looking skin. In many cases, the happy truth is... less is more. You may be surprised to know that our skin is actually quite efficient at taking care of itself. With a little help from us, it can be at the top of its game.

The Organic Body Products page gives more tips for spotting truly organic products from the many imposters.

Time to Get Out of Our Own Way

Often, our mistake is the fact that we use products that work against our skin. We slather on suffocating moisturizers leaving our skin unable to breathe and release toxins. Then we over cleanse, stripping our skin of its natural oils that protect it and our health. Our skin becomes confused and likely will start to act out in self defense.

I urge you to read on. The Natural and Organic Soap page gives important information on cleansing without damaging skin.

Homemade Facial Moisturizer with Olive Oil

My personal best facial moisturizer of all time is the Olive Oil Mask. It gives a deep cleansing of the pores, a nourishing drink for your skin and a glowing complexion.

Natural olive oil is full of antioxidants that every skin type can benefit from. Yes, even oily skin can benefit from olive oil! Oil can dissolve other oils. The olive oil mask is particularily effective at cleansing skin when combined with castor oil. The combination cleans pores and rinses dirt and extra oil away, leaving skin soft and fresh.

A popular homemade facial moisturizer is as follows…

  • Making a homemade skin care recipe... Some people use pure olive oil with nothing added. However, the benefits of adding some castor oil will improve the cleansing of pores. The more oily the skin the more castor oil it will need. I have the common T-zone skin type. Oily skin on forehead, nose and chin and dry everywhere else.
  • I use about 15% castor oil 4 months out of the year when the weather is cold and dry. I increase that to about 30% castor oil during the hot, humid months. Using more than 40% castor oil can dry the skin and is not recommended.

  • It is to be gently massaged on to the skin in small circular motions. It should penetrate the skin. No need to be afraid of the natural oil!
  • Steaming pores to un-clog them of unwanted oil and dirt can be an added beneficial step. (Don’t worry these oils will not clog pores) I’ve found if I’m pressed for time I apply the natural oil solution about 1 minute before I get into the shower. While in the shower I try not to let it rinse off for another couple minutes. This way the heat from the water opens the pores. Not ideal, but better than nothing, in a pinch!

Some find this process gentle enough to do daily. However, I've found that I get just as much out of it as doing it 2-3 times per week.

Keep your best facial moisturizer pure. It is important to work with clean ingredients. Keep your potion in a cool, dark and dry spot. When your mix runs dry, thoroughly wash your bottle by hand or in a dishwasher. You may even want to boil it before mixing your next batch.

Homemade skin care recipes are great for treating your skin to natural treatments on your own terms. In addition, don't forget to check out the home remedies page to learn the key ingredients for making your own custom skin care products. The great news is that those ingredients are most likely in your kitchen already!

Other facial skin care beauty tips with Olive Oil…

  • It can be used to remove makeup, including eye makeup.
  • It is a great oil to use to give yourself a facial massage. Facial massages are great for keeping skin circulated and healthy looking!
  • Some use as a deep conditioner on hair for a healthy shine.
  • Small amounts on skin can be used alone as a leave-on natural moisturizer. Blotting lightly with a tissue after application is recommended.

  • Olive oil is a great medium for treating yourself to an anti aging facial massage.

  • Avoid the eye area if you are planning on wearing eye makeup soon after moisturizing. However, I have found that a little of "my best facial moistuizer" applied first thing in the morning gives skin a smooth and glowing complexion after makeup is later applied.

Toning

This step is often skipped in skin care regimens. It is important that it is included as the right toner will bring skin back to its natural pH level. This helps it function at its best. It also enables skin to "accept" your best facial moisturizer better.

General facial skin care beauty tips for toning....

  • It should be alcohol free
  • Tone before moisturizing
  • Should be organic and/or free of dangerous ingredients
  • Nightly toning is sufficient for most skin types
  • Morning and nightly toning might be in order for oily skin types

If you are not using an Alpha Hydroxy Acid Moisturizer on your face you may wish to consider weekly exfoliation. Generally, oily skin requires 3-4 times per week. Dry or sensitive skin should be exfoliated 1-2 times per week.

However, Dry Skin Brushing is a GREAT exfoliation process for the whole body, excluding the face. Their are numerous skin and health advantages to this practice. Read more to find out why dry skin brushing is increasing in popularity! Don't miss this quick and easy Beauty Tip!

Other Facial Moisturizers

Most skin types call for some type of moisturizing. Evening and morning are the times for this skin care step. If you are lucky, just dabbing some olive oil on your face may be a sufficient nightly drink for your skin.

Very oily skin may need a lighter oil such as jojoba or grapeseed oil. Make sure your nightly moisturizer does not contain a sunscreen. It is simply not needed at this step.

If you are interested in moisturizers and skin creams with a little more "kick." Please visit the natural anti aging page for more information.

A homemade skin care recipe might be a little more complicated for the morning and here's why. Your best facial moisturizer should contain a broad spectrum sunscreen. If you are using a homemade facial moisturizer be sure to suffiently apply a sunscreen before your lotion.

Think of your morning moisturizer as your battle armor. It will protect you from weather elements, pollution and slow premature aging if you choose the right one.

Morning moisturizers should include...

A Natural Moisturizing component - these will lock in moisture while allowing healthy respiration of the skin. examples...

  • Lecithin
  • Shea Butter
  • Jojoba oil
  • Aloe Vera

A sunscreen of AT LEAST 15spf.

Antioxidants - these stop the premature break down of cells by free radicals. examples...

  • Vitamins C and E
  • Alpha Lipoic acid
  • Coenzyme Q10
  • Olive oil

Using products with these ingredients can do your skin a world of good. However, avoiding moisturizers loaded with potentially harmful chemicals is just as (if not more) important. Please visit the Skin Care Ingredients to Avoid page to learn more.

Remember your children's skin care. It is logical to think that products made for babies and children are mild and safe. After all, they come in sweet, pretty packages. They often say things like, "calming lotion," "gentle," or "soothing." Unfortunately, there are many dangerous ingredients found in baby products.

What may be somewhat dangerous for an adult can be worse on a developing system. If you are replacing skin care products in your household, my advice would be to start with your children's first. Please, go from "best facial moisturizer" page and visit the Organic Baby Products Page for more information.
