Natural and Organic Food

Organic food can cost considerably more than conventional food. If buying everything organic is simply out of the question, you can still do things to protect yourself.

For instance, I try and buy all "fleshy" fruits and vegetables as organic. Simply put, if I eat the skin, I want it to be organic. If it is "protected" by a skin that is peeled off and discarded I may buy conventional (ex. bananas, pineapple).

If a food item is labeled as "Natural" it should mean that it is minmally processed. Either way, natural and organic food (produce) needs to be washed before you eat it. They have great natural veggie washes in most grocery stores.

Even if you aren't buying organic, buying seasonal produce makes sense on many levels. Here are a few good reasons...

Some examples to get you started...

  • Winter - carrots, oranges, pears, onions, winter squash
  • Spring - avocados, cucumbers, peas, asparagus
  • Summer - strawberries, watermelon, peaches, zucchini
  • Fall - sweet peppers, spinach, nuts, pumpkin, broccoli

organic farming You may want to think about joining a local food Co-op. This way you will be getting fresh, in season produce. You will also be supporting your local farmers. It's a win-win!

New studies are discovering that the advantages of organic food intake go beyond what you are not getting. Scientists are finding that the nutritional value in certain organic foods is higher than in the non-organic products. Organic milk is one of these foods that has been found to be more nutritious. It has the added benefit of having no additional hormones - great for growing toddlers!

Another one of the benefits of organic food is the lighter impact it has on our environment. When we buy organic foods we support farms that don't use chemical pesticides and herbicides that seep into our watersheds. Organic agriculture is also commited to protecting our air and soil.

Certainly, the benefits of organic food consumption are numerous. Hopefully, the information provided will help you to decide what you can do for your health and well-being.
